Description
Bianca Regl was born in Linz, Austria, in 1980. She lives and works between Vienna and Beijing.
Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in figurative oil painting, where sensuous colour, light and gesture become central elements of expression. Through a refined balance between controlled brushwork and generous painterly movement, Regl explores the essence of everyday phenomena, objects and the human body. Her paintings often unfold on monochrome backgrounds, creating a strong tension between figuration and abstraction, presence and disappearance, light and darkness.
In her large scale works, Bianca Regl refers not only to the history of Baroque painting, but also to the contemporary relevance of figurative painting today. Her visual language combines graphical lines, intense realism and expressive colour fields, allowing the image to move between observation, memory and atmosphere. Colour appears in her work as a natural unity, an unbroken harmony through which forms, bodies and objects reveal their inner presence.
Bianca Regl studied painting at the University of Art and Design Linz, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the University of California at Los Angeles and the Ateliers des Beaux Arts in Paris. Her work has been presented in numerous international institutions, including the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Museum Liaunig in Neuhaus, Today Art Museum in Beijing, Kunsthalle Krems, Museum Angerlehner in Wels, Schlossmuseum Linz, Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Landesgalerie Niederösterreich in Krems, Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund, and Yuan Art Museum in Beijing.
Alongside her artistic practice, Bianca Regl has also played an important role in the international art scene. In 2010, she helped establish OFF 空间 in Beijing, China, where she has been director since 2017.
Through her powerful and sensitive approach to painting, Bianca Regl creates works that reflect on authenticity, perception and the emotional depth of colour. Her oeuvre stands as a remarkable contribution to contemporary figurative painting, connecting Austrian and international artistic perspectives with a distinctive and highly personal visual language.
