Carole A. Feuerman

Carole A. Feuerman (née en 1945 à New York) est une sculptrice superréaliste de renommée internationale dont les œuvres figuratives monumentales, d’une grande exigence technique, sont devenues des références de la sculpture contemporaine. Connue pour ses figures de nageurs, parmi lesquelles Innertube et The Golden Mean, Feuerman associe un travail minutieux des surfaces à un sens architectural de la présence, créant des œuvres qui tiennent à la fois du portrait intime et du monument dans l’espace public. Sa pratique comprend des installations intérieures et extérieures, des projets activés par l’eau et une série récente d’iconographies mythologiques.
Feuerman a commencé sa carrière professionnelle dans les années 1960 en réalisant des dessins et des peintures pour The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper et The New York Times. Dans les années 1970, elle a entrepris une série d’œuvres murales fragmentées. Dans les années 1990, ses œuvres ont pris des dimensions supérieures à la taille humaine, moulées en résine et en bronze. Sa maîtrise technique, son modelage et ses finitions méticuleux servent une démarche conceptuelle : représenter des corps perçus comme des présences vivantes tout en invitant à réfléchir à la visibilité, à la résilience et à la mémoire collective.
Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans de grands lieux internationaux, notamment Park Avenue, Central Park et le Metropolitan Museum of Art à New York ; le Palazzo Bonaparte et le Palazzo Strozzi en Italie ; la Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery ; et le State Hermitage Museum. Elles figurent dans les collections permanentes de plus de trente musées et appartiennent également aux villes de Sunnyvale, CA, et de Peekskill, NY. Parmi ses collectionneurs privés de premier plan figurent Steven A. Cohen, William L. Mack, Glenn Fuhrman, Alexandre Grendene, l’ancien président Bill Clinton, Andrea Bocelli et Malcolm Forbes. Feuerman a donné des conférences et animé des ateliers dans des institutions telles que le Guggenheim Museum et le Metropolitan Museum of Art. En 2011, elle a fondé la Feuerman Sculpture Foundation pour soutenir la pratique sculpturale et la rencontre du public avec l’art en trois dimensions. En 2025, sa fondation a lancé le Feuerman Sculpture Park au Medici Museum dans l’Ohio.
Les distinctions saluant la contribution de Feuerman à l’art contemporain comprennent le Lifetime Achievement Award de l’International Sculpture Center (2026), le World of Peace Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts (Athènes), le Goddess Artemis Lifetime Achievement Award de l’EAWC, le premier prix du Huan Tai Hu Museum (Changzhou), le prix Best in Show de la Biennale de Pékin, l’Amelia Peabody Award et le Medici Award à Florence.

« Mon travail explore une tension féconde entre fidélité et métaphore. Je cherche à représenter le corps humain avec un réalisme sans concession, la peau mouillée, l’eau scintillante, la musculature en équilibre, afin que le public éprouve une intimité immédiate, presque tactile, qui ouvre ensuite sur des questions plus vastes d’identité, d’endurance et de vie publique. L’eau revient comme élément formel et symbolique : miroir, voile et agent de transformation. Dans mes projets récents, le corps est traité comme un palimpseste : les surfaces tatouées et les ornements appliqués deviennent des champs narratifs où les histoires privées croisent la mémoire culturelle partagée. Pour moi, l’hyperréel n’est pas illusion, mais révélation : un moyen de dévoiler la vie intérieure et les possibles sociaux par un travail artisanal méticuleux et une empathie soutenue. »
