Malcolm Poynter

ENGLAND

Malcolm Poynter is an English sculptor and painter whose powerful and fantastical universe occupies a singular place in contemporary art. Born in England in 1946, he studied at Goldsmiths College of Art and the Royal College of Art, before developing an international career marked by sculpture, painting, performance and teaching.

His work explores the fragility of the human condition, the structures of power, and the darker tensions that shape society. Often provocative, theatrical and deeply psychological, his sculptures combine realism, surrealism and baroque intensity. Behind each work lies a story, a trigger or a memory, whether drawn from childhood, political events, social observation or art historical references.

In the 1970s, Poynter became known as one of the most radical voices of the London art scene. His figures, sometimes disturbing, sometimes humorous, challenged conventions and pushed sculpture into new emotional and physical territories. His practice has also been connected to experimental theatre and performance, and his influence continues to resonate among younger generations of artists.

Throughout his career, Poynter has also shared his vision as a visiting lecturer in sculpture, teaching in the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and Australia. His artistic universe has attracted the attention of important cultural figures, including Peter Gabriel, with whom he collaborated in 1982 on an experimental video.

Today, Malcolm Poynter lives and works in Aigen Schlägl, Austria, where he has created a vast studio and exhibition space. His philosophy is inspired by a couplet attributed to Goethe: “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” This idea reflects the spirit of his artistic practice, a world where boldness, imagination and creative freedom become forces of transformation.
