Verena Schatz
AUSTRIA
Verena Schatz (b. Innsbruck, 1983) is an Austrian artist and glassmaker whose work moves at the intersection of art, craft, and design, ranging from interactive installations to sculptural works and functional objects.
She began her training at the Glasfachschule and HTL in Kramsach, working for several years as a glass technician before shifting her focus to the material as a medium of artistic expression. Verena’s path led her through international experiences: an internship at the Corning Museum of Glass (USA), studies in Glass Design at the University of Kalmar (Sweden), and a BA in Glass from the Royal Danish Academy (Denmark) in 2012. She later received her MFA from the Institute for Ceramic and Glass Art at Hochschule Koblenz (Germany), where she also worked as a lecturer and director of the glass studio until 2017.
Since then, Verena has lived and worked in St. Konrad near Gmunden. In 2021 she founded Glass Maker Space, a workshop dedicated both to her own practice and to teaching. Her approach combines technical mastery with artistic experimentation, exploring the endless versatility of glass. She is particularly fascinated by the material’s liquid and malleable state, an impression that often remains formally present in her works, even after glass solidifies into rigid form.
Her works are represented in several public collections, including the art collection of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Schlossmuseum Linz, and the City of Innsbruck. In 2022 she was awarded the Josef-Franz-Würlinger Prize.
